Pigtailed thermo-optic 1×2-switch in polymer: Design and experimental evaluation

The Grst polymer-based, pigtailed digital optical 1×2 switch (DOS) using the thermo-optic effect is characterised. Measurements with actively positioned single mode fibre pigtails yielded insertion losses of 3.6 dB and extinction ratios of about -20 dB. Switching time is below 1 ms. Thermal and mechanical stability have been tested for the packaged component.
