In telecom applications high performance, such as low threshold currents, high output powers and wide operating temperature ranges, combined with low costs are needed, to bring optical fibre transmission into a competitive position with coaxial/electronic solutions. Thus a rationalized, state of the art, high-yielding technology in optoelectronic device manufacturing is required. In this paper, a unique approach will be presented. It comprises the use of advanced technology 'building blocks' applied to 2 inch diameter InP wafers to manufacture a range of laser devices: Strained Layer Multiple Quantum Well (SLMQW) Buried Ridge Stripe (BRS) 1.3 μm high power high temperature Fabry Perot (FP) lasers as well as 1.3 and 1.55 μm Distributed Feedback (DFB) lasers for up to 2.5 Gb/s applications are described.
