ISPs design their IP backbones to meet Service Level Agreements (SLA) in terms of loss, delay and port availability. It is discussed in research papers that real time applications such as VoIP can be supported with high quality over these IP backbones without any QoS mechanisms. However, ISPs still experience frequent and short lived failures which may adversely affect the availability of these real time applications. Therefore the concept of service availability is discussed as a new SLA parameter in related papers. In this study, we first briefly discuss the availability as a new metric for QoS purposes. Some extensions of the current QoS related problems are considered. Then, we mainly focus on the current and future IP backbones and related problems. Using many nice characteristics of the IP backbones, computation of the availability and use of this metric in routing and related effects are discussed. The existence of better alternative paths in terms of availability are demonstrated. Finally, using simulations and analysis, it is also discussed that using simple availability aware routing mechanisms, it is possible to improve the service availability guarantees in IP backbones.
