Stability Analysis of Soil Slopes Based on Instrumented Strain Information

In order to investigate the relationship between strains of slope body and its factor of safety, numerical model was built via finite difference software-FLAC. By applying a gradually increasing load on top of slopes with different heights, the strains were numerically recorded until the failure state. The results indicated that the linear strain mutation along the potential sliding surface can be used as a criterion for slope failure. In addition, this paper presented the progressive failure progress of slopes of different heights, during which the factors of safety and the corresponding strains were analyzed. Based on the results, an empirical equation relating the factor of safety to the characteristic horizontal strains was derived. It can be used as a theoretical guidance for preliminary slope stability assessment based on the instrumented strain or deformations.
