摘要

The proposed design evaluation method was effective in determining design strategies of machine tools, in its concept design stage. The predicted result showed a good agreement with design knowledge of skilled machine tool designers. In this report, the design evaluation method was applied in analyzing structure of 5-axis machine tools. By defining common design parameters and error factors to different machine tools structures, it was possible to clarify the effect of structure on the machine performance. As the results of the design evaluation, when all the types have the same ranges of design parameters and errors, "2 double pivot spindle head type" seemed to have the best theoretical performance. For future work, more practical comparison of structure based on detailed definition of design parameters and error factors should be done. Other error sources such as structural deformation and thermal deformation should be considered. And other design constraints such as work area will also be important information for determining design guidelines for 5-axis machine tools.
