The existing Ringhals 2 main control room and constituent HIS has now been inrnoperation approximately 30 years. It has been estimated that the plant's life expectancyrncan be extended a further 25 years, assuming that a comprehensive modernisation of thernpresent R2 I & C systems is implemented. This paper is intended to provide generalrnoverview of the modernisation programme expected to be completed and in operationrnduring 2006. A critical aspect of the Ringhals modernisation programme that had to berntackled with was the design development process adopted for design specification, designrndevelopment and design verification of the MCR and HIS solutions. The project is alsornsomewhat unique due to the utilisation of a full scale control room mock up for extensiverndesign verification procedures in regards to layout issues, task procedure issues, trafficrnflows, lighting etc. This proved of invaluable assistance in identifying potential designrnproblems at an early stage in development. In some respects the project has been a testrnbench – both for Ringhals and for the contractor. But it is important that due to thernuniqueness of this project that the lessons learned may provide valuable input to otherrnmodernisation programmes within the nuclear industry.
