WORLD CLASS BATCH PRODUCTIVITY: ENABLING THE SUPPLY CHAIN

Today's business process management focuses on the supply chain. The supply chain process delivers a company's value proposition to its customers. Manufacturing clearly resides as a vital link in this chain. Batch productivity is viewed as both a manufacturing output measure and a necessary enabler for the efficient and effective operation of the supply chain. This view is different from past practices when manufacturing was viewed by some businesses as a "necessary evil" and most company's preferred to be portfolio managers. This new "seat at the table" of the business for batch productivity brings on new influences. The purpose of this paper is show that an integrated approach is needed to determine the overall influences to batch productivity. A company's vision, mission, strategies, policies, and processes all play a role. Prior to this view, only tactics and procedures were really important on the plant floor. A strategic approach to batch productivity allows the manufacturing unit to better understand its role to the business. This approach attempts to filter through the internal and external influences in a business that effect batch productivity. This approach is described in the following hierarchical pyramid depiction of these influences. The more detailed approaches in each level are discussed in the paper.
