Many motor vehicle designs offer extremely limited space for an engine air induction system. Therefore, activities in recent years have been focused on reducing the filter package size by developing compact, high performance filters. This paper provides analysis of the latest direct flow compact engine air filters including fluted and pleated designs. rnThe direct flow multi-element panel and cylindrical fluid filters utilize alternating pleating. This new filter family makes it possible to either reduce the filter size for a given fluid flow rate or increase the fluid flow rate for a filter with a size comparable to a conventional cylindrical filter. rnThis paper discusses design trends in engine air filtration analyzing the physical structure of the newest filter designs. Performance characteristics and filtration criteria are specified in the section dedicated to filter selection. Since new reduced volume filters are gradually being introduced to the OEM market, new criteria like media utilization factor, the volumetric dust capacity index, and the volumetric specific capacity need to be analyzed.
