The structure of hydrocyclone was designed with a series of modifications, and the comprehensive effects of the structural modifications on the flow field and separation performance indices of hydrocyclones were investigated experimentally. The twodimensional flow fields inside hydrocyclones, including the time-mean radial and axial velocity components and the radial and axial turbulence, were experimentally investigated by using a laser-surveying instrument named Laser Doppler Anemometer (LDA). The separation performance indices included the reduced separation efficiency, separation sharpness, cut size, capacity and flow split. The results showed that different modification of the hydrocyclone structure resulted in different change of the flow field, and consequently certain performance indices could be improved by introducing a proper structure modification. From the experimental results of this study, valuable clues or guidance could be obtained for the structure design of hydrocyclones with different target indices in different applications.
