A Study of Scale-up MSTLFLO Process for Oily Water Treatment

This paper presents a follow-up study on the application of a newly developed multi-stage loop-flow (MSTLFLO~?) flotation process for wastewater treatment. Experiments have been carried out in a 12-inch outside diameter (O.D.) MSTLFLO column for separating emulsified oil from oily water. Test results when combined with previous experimental data obtained in a 4-inch O.D. unit provide a basis for establishing scale-up parameters for the design of commercial scale units. Experimentally determined kinetic constants have been correlated with operating conditions in terms of hydrodynamic parameters, including gas holdup, sauter bubble size, and liquid volumetric flow rate. The performance data indicates that a simple geometric ratio of column diameters can be used as the basis for column scale-up. Further development to explore its potential industrial and commercial applications is discussed.
