In the Fall of 1993, Koch Membrane System (DMS) began a comparison of the different wastewater treatment technologies available to ensure continuing compliance with the Massachusetts Water Resouce Agency (MWRA) discharge limits for zinc (Zn) and nickel (Ni). KMS began looking at their current wastewater treatment processes with an eye to reducing the levels of these contaminants in the plant's discharge. Several treatment options were examined, including waste reduction, housekeeping and production modifications - even changing the formulation of our products that contributed to comtaminants and heavy metals in the wastewater. Specifically, conventional physical/chemical precipitation/treatment, ion exchange/electorlytic recovery and chemical precipitation followed by ultrafiltration (UF) were examined. Based on economics, technical and operating (labor, chemical cost, variability in effluent quality) considerations, simple hydroxide precipitation followed by UF was selected as the best technology and equipment ot have in place. This treatment scheme would even meet the tigter discharge regulations of the future.
