Ultra-thin concerete overalys are generally defined as a Portland cement concerete overaly having a thickness of 50 mm (2 inches) to 100 mm (4 inches). It is being tested on an experimental basis at several airports in the United States. If successful, it will provide a method of gaining the advantages of a Portland cment concerete apron surface at a cost competitive with a conventional asphaltic concerete overaly with a seal coat. This would be possible at a much lower cost than conventional thick concerete overalys or removal of existing pavement and replacement with a conventional thick concerete pavement.
