A multi-state research project entitled “Aerial Pollutants Emissions from Confined AnimalBuildings,” (APECAB) measured baseline emissions of ammonia (NH3), hydrogen sulfide(H2S), carbon dioxide (CO2), particulate matter ≤ 10 μm in diameter (PM10), and odor from sixdifferent types of animal buildings. This paper discusses the results of data collected from twodry sow (gestation and breeding) buildings in Minnesota over a 14-month time period. The dailymean ammonia emission rates for the gestation and breeding barns were 15.5±6.8 and 22.1±5.9g/d-AU (AU = 500 kg animal mass) respectively, with the higher value occurring in the breedingbarn that contained pens instead of stalls in part of the building. The ammonia emission rates forboth barns over the 14 months of research were relatively constant. There was a diurnal patternfor NH3 and other gas concentrations probably due to changing ventilation rates and animal andmanure management practices. Hydrogen sulfide emissions exhibited no seasonal trend withmean emission rates of 1.40±0.76 and 1.55±0.66 g/d-AU for the gestation and breeding barn,respectively. Because these barns had shallow manure pits or gutters below the floors, there werespikes of hydrogen sulfide released while the manure was drained from the gutters. Mean CO2 emissions were 5860±1020 and 6970±1520 g/d-AU for the gestation and breeding barns,respectively. Mean emissions of particulate matter of 10 microns and smaller diameter particles(PM10) averaged slightly more than 1.21±0.38 g/d-AU for both barns with mean PM10concentrations of 550±240 μg/m3. Finally mean odor emissions found in the study varied from41±38 OU/s-AU for the gestation barn to 49±38 OU/s-AU for the breeding building. This isconsistent with the findings for NH3, H2S, and CO2 that found slightly higher emissions in thebreeding barn because of the open pens and differences in barn management.
