The authors have been developing the gasification system for solid wastes such as wood chips and plastics with high temperature steam to generate hydrogen-rich and/or middle calorific value gas. The most remarkable characteristic of the system is to supply only high temperature (over 1273K) steam generated by a high temperature heat exchanger. High temperature steam is used both as a gasifying agent and a heat supply medium. In this paper, the experimental results of the demonstration plant whose capacity is 1.2 t/day are reported when wood chips were used as feedstocks. The gasification performance of the gasifier such as the gaseous composition and the temperature distribution in the gasifier are evaluated as functions of the operational parameters such as the steam/carbon molar ratio and the steam temperature. The reforming performances in the reformer are also evaluated by using the reforming temperature as an operational parameter. Finally, the power generation performances of a rotary type and a reciprocating type gas engines using the product gas are evaluated. In addition, the energy balance of the system is investigated to evaluate the overall performance of the gasification system.
