THERMAL TREATMENT OF RUBBERWOOD RESIDUE FOR ITS EFFECTUAL USE

Large amount of residues are discharged from the rubberwood manufacturing process and in some countries these residues are illegally disposed and burned which lead to serious pollution problems. The objective of this study is to utilize and treated these residues to produce the useful products such as pyroligneous acid (PA), char and off-gas. Firstly, the elemental analysis of rubberwood and its constituents namely cellulose, lignin and xylan were performed. The value found to be within the range reported for various type of wood. Secondly, the kinetic measurements of wood pyrolysis performed by non-isothermal thermogravimetric analysis under inert atmosphere but at different heating rates were studied. Based on the peaks, the apparent activation energy was determined and the decomposition behavior of the rubberwood was found to behave as the sum of the constituents respectively. Next, the rubberwood sawdust was pyrolyzed in the fixed bed reactor under N_2, N_2-CO_2 and steam atmospheres until a maximum temperature of 1273 K. The effect of temperature and atmosphere were studied. The yield of PA, char and off-gas were almost equivalent in the temperature lower than 873 K at different atmosphere but at the higher temperature, the yield of char and off-gas with steam were lower and higher than those of char and off-gas with N_2 and N_2-CO_2. Lastly, the improvement method in manufacturing process was proposed.
