Optimum Daylight Design Methods of Visual Environments in Toplit Atrium

The atrium spaces in the modern architecture play a great role in enhancing amenity of congested urban areas. These spaces provide a comfort thermal environment and continuously changing and visually exciting environment created by skylight and sun patches entering through the atrium openings, while providing outdoor like atmosphere supported by visual links to outside. However, visual and thermal discomfort is also common due to excessive sunlight influx. Therefore, the solar control system should be applied to optimize the daylight performance. This study aims to evaluate daylight performance of toplit atrium and propose the optimum daylight design methods. For the purpose, daylight performances of toplit atrium are analyzed by ADELINE 2.0 program under clear sky conditions. The parameters studied were well index, solar altitude, solar azimuth, and louver angle and reflectance. Analyzing the simulation results, the optimum design methods of visual environment of atrium buildings in Korea are proposed.
