Quench Oil Fire in Olefin Furnace

In November, 2005, Eastman's Hydrocarbon Cracking Plant #4 experienced a major fire in one of the olefin furnaces, severely damaging the furnace and causing minor damage to the adjacent furnace. The fire was caused by a series of unusual events which led to large quantities of quench oil entering the furnace firebox while the furnace was being shut down. The most significant event or contributing cause was fouling in the Gasoline Fractionator, which caused high liquid inventory in the Fractionator. This paper will focus on the series of events which led to the fire and corrective actions taken to prevent such an event from reoccurring.
