On March 17, 2003 Kaltim-4 Ammonia plant experienced an emergency shut down due to a high voltage power failure. The primary reformer unit tripped, but the flow of process air to HT Shift Converter (HTS) through the secondary reformer was not closed. This caused a temperature overrun in the HTS and damaged the catalyst Inspection of the HTS vessel showed a severe overheating. The catalyst was replaced and the vessel was operated for eight months at reduced operating conditions until a new vessel could be installed. On January 2004, the HTS vessel and catalyst were replaced and the plant is back to normal at 108% capacity.
