Ion nitriding is a surface modification and not a coating. It imparts surface hardening to 1200 HV and case depths to 0.030 in. Work is made a cathode in a DC circuit, in vacuum, and the process gas initially atomically cleans the surface, then ionized gas composition alters the surface structure. The work has a characteristic purple glow during processing. Ion nitrding is energy efficient and environmentally clean. It's an environmentally friendly way to improve wear resistance in many applications. Injection molding dies for filled high-wear applications are ideally suited for ion nitride treatment. Deep crevice molds are another good application. Ion nitriding has also been successfully applied to cranshafts, camshafts, gears, forging dies, stamping dies and fuel injector nozzles.
