The proposed direct measurements of PM extinction and its absorption and scattering components will allow for (a) direct quantification of visibility impairment, (b) maintenance of the IMPROVE algorithm that was adopted by the US EPA as basis for the regional haze metric,1 (c) source attribution of PM light absorption to mineral dust and to black and brown carbon and the high- and low-temperature combustion processes that generate it, and (d) greatly improved utilization of previous, current, and future Teflon filter samples for the measurement of PM light absorption.
