Monitoring and Prediction of Asian Dust (Hwangsa) in Korea

Asian Dust is windborne dust, frequently originating from the Sand Desert, Gobi Desert and Loess Plateau in Northern China and Mongolia during the spring season. This dust phenomenon is called—or-known as 'Woo-to' or 'Hwangsa' in Korea for 1830 years since A. D.174. Recently, Asian Dust has a tendency to intensify and frequently occurred in Korea. The Meteorological Research Institute (METRI) of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) has played a key role in development of monitoring, prediction system and verification researches of the effects of climate, public health, and the origin of Asian Dust. In this paper, we would like to introduce the research activities and achievements regarding on the Asian Dust project accomplished by METRI sponsored by KMA. Mainly, database, monitoring and prediction of Asian Dust in Korea were referred in this paper.
