Agricultural Biotechnology, the Impact on Global Agriculture and Trade

After more than six years of experience with biotech crops in the marketplace, there is not a single scientific report that casts doubt on their safety when compared to conventional crops. Biotechnology may prove to be a useful tool for improving agricultural productivity, enhancing food quality and safety, and decreasing the environmental impact of agriculture. This will only happen if safety concerns are answered and political, economic and social issues surrounding the technology are resolved. Evidence is accumulating which suggests that there is are risks and costs associated with failure to use biotechnology. In the future, a full disclosure of information and an open exchange of ideas may lead to sound science -based informed decision -making regarding biotechnology in place of the present ill-informed and often acrimonious debate.
