The influence of local buckling on the compressive response of thin-walled columns is forrnlocal buckling to effectively interact with the longer length modes of buckling, such as global Euler-flexuralrnbuckling or Distortional buckling, resulting in a nonlinear post-buckled coupled instability response culminatingrnin reduced failure levels. The paper looks at the development of suitable finite element modelling strategies andrnprocedures taking due account of geometrical symmetry, kinematic support and loading conditions, materialrnnonlinearity and geometrical imperfections, to accurately simulate the interactive failure mechanics of I-sectionrncolumn behaviour.
