Quasi-phasematched (QPM) frequency conversion has been an area of practical importance over the past five years with the development of techniques for fabricating periodically poled ferroelectric materials. This chapter reviews these materials and their applications to QPM devices. This first section contains background information on the role of phasematching in nonlinear frequency conversion. Section 2 presents a theoretical analysis of QPM structures and fabrication tolerances. Section 3 describes methods of fabricating periodically poled materials. Finally, Section 4 discusses QPM devices that have been demonstrated and that are envisioned.
