We present an analysis of SO_2 from GOME-2 and AODrnfrom MODIS for the K(i)lauea volcano (Hawaii) duringrnstrongly enhanced passive degassing activity in March-rnOctober 2008. By analyzing the downwind evolution onrnthe basis of monthly mean maps of SO_2 and AOD, inrncombination with wind fields, typical time constants andrnemissions/production rates can be determined. We foundrna mean SO_2 lifetime of about 2-3 days, and emissionsrnof about 10 kilotons/day of SO_2 for K(i)lauea. The relationrnbetween aerosol formation and SO_2 depletion wasrninvestigated quantitatively. For the aerosol depletion, arntime-constant of 2-6 days was estimated.
