Aiming at the key technical problems of high head single-lift navigation locks, the application of interior energy dissipator (IED) in filling and empting system (FES) of navigation locks is put forward and the basic layout principles are indicated. On the basis of analyzing the dissipating characteristics of various typical IEDs, the dropshaft-type IED is adopted, and the specific form of the FES with drop-shaft-type IED and the methods to determine its main controlling dimensions are studied. The layout of this new FES is been put up for the Yin-pan navigation lock on Wujiang River which has the third highest water head among the single-lift navigation locks a-round the world, and the hydraulic characteristics of this new FES are studied in detail by the experiments, its advantages and disadvantages compared with the common manifold FES of the same lock are also analyzed.
