With the development of the city and the following need of civil construction, manyrnunderground lines in the city are required to be constructed, reconstructed or revived.rnHorizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) technology has been developing rapidly andrnapplied in many fields all over the world. With the extension of its application fields, therndemand for the HDD rig operator is increasing everyday both quantity and quality.rnObviously, the operating skill will affect the engineering quality for the HDDrnengineering directly and even decide its success or failure sometimes. At the same time,rndue to the HDD engineering is constructed under the ground the trainee cannot see therndrilling status with their own eyes so that they cannot understand and find out thernrelevance between the rig operating and real drilling process systematically and totally.rnAs a result, it is necessary to train enough operators and improve their proficiency forrnoperating the HDD rig, which only can assure the success for the HDD projects. Aimedrnto solve this problem, this paper combines the three dimension design software with thernvirtual reality software to develop a virtual train system for the HDD rig operatingrntraining based on the theory of the virtual reality technology. The cost of this virtualrntraining system is quite lower with many advantages such as safety and efficiency. Threerndimensional models of the HDD rig are built by the PRO/E software, then exported intornthe virtual reality software VIRTOOLS for the virtual simulation through by the datarnexchange interface and set relevant operating according to the work process of HDDrnengineering.
