A simulation procedure has been developed for predicting the transmission efficiency of a metal pushing V-belt of a continuously variable transmission (CVT) in relation to any arbitrarily chosen operating condition. This procedure is based on theoretical calculations of transmission efficiency which take into account belt slipping (speed loss) that occurs when gaps between the elements are narrowed on the pulleys, and friction loss (torque loss) caused by relative slipping between the elements and the innermost bands as well as between adjacent bands. The calculated results obtained with this procedure showed good quantitative agreement with the experimental data, confirming the validity of this method. This simulation procedure was used to make clear the distribution of power losses suffered by the metal CVT belt and the effects of various operating parameters on belt transmission efficiency.
