'Road To Rig' Test Systems - New Transmission Powertrain Durability Testing Facility

In 1997 FORD decided to build a new powertrain test facility for manual transmission testing in Merkenich, Germany, based on the revolutionary 'Road to Rig' test strategy. Starting construction work in March 1998 the building was finished after only one year. The test systems installed in this new facility are the most advanced in terms of vehicle, driver and engine simulation capability. This paper outlines the capabilities of the test systems at FORD and presents some aspects of implementing 'Road to Rig' test systems from the mechanical layout up to the functional integration of simulation into the development process.
