Due to the initiatives from both government and industry to use materials that are "environmentally preferred", it has become critical to reformulate rubber to metal adhesives with new materials that fit this criteria. Lead compounds have traditionally been relied upon at low levels in adhesives for their effective environmental resistance properties, in particular, corrosion protection. In light of the initiatives, substitute chemistry has been sought that shows promise in replacement of lead systems. Proprietary formulations have been developed that meet or exceed the level of performance in environmental resistance compared to lead-containing products without the environmental concerns. Several commercial adhesives have been formulated to-date as drop-fits for certain traditional products. Test results with the new adhesives, including mechanical testing, primary adhesion and accelerated environmental testing show performance equivalent to the traditional products. Lord Chemical Products Division plans to expand this program to promote the migration away from the use of lead additives in our rubber to metal adhesives in compliance with these environmental initiatives.
