Abstract: We will present a system to perform closed-loop opticaltests of the 64 cm diameter, 336 actuator adaptivesecondary made at the Steward Observatory MirrorLaboratory. Testing will include Shack-Hartmannwavefront sensing and modal correction of static anddynamic aberrated wavefronts. The test optical systemis designed so that experiments can be made with boththe focal plane instrument and secondary installed intheir normal configuration at the MMT, or with the same9 m spacing in a laboratory test tower. The convexsecondary will be illuminated at normal incidencethrough two 70 cm diameter lenses mounted just below.The artificial, aberrated star is projected from nearthe wavefront sensor in the Cassegrain focus assembly.Computer generated holograms correct for sphericalaberration in the really optics at the test wavelengthsof 0.594 and 1.5 $mu@m. Atmospheric turbulence isreproduced by two spinning transmission platesimprinted with Kolmogorov turbulence. The Shimmulatorwill give us the opportunity to test fully the adaptiveoptics system before installation at the new MMT, hencesaving much precious telescope time. !15
