Potential and effective ways for developing grassland resources in the red-yellow soil region of southern China

Based on analysis of the features of nature, social economy, resources and environment in the red-yellow soil region of southern China, ways for developing and utilization of the forage in this region are discussed in this paper. Included are: 1) co-cultivation of forage with forestry, 2) growing grass with management to prevent soil and water loss, 3) protection and improvement the eco-environment of the waste hilly areas of this region by utilization of fallow paddy fields during winter by planting grasses as a crop-grass rotation system for solving forage and fertilizer shortage problems, 3) to combine grass growing with fish raising to promote fishery development based on the abundant water and heat resources and large areas of surface water in this region, and 4) developing artificial dry fodder techniques to balance the in-season and off-season forage supply.
