New Herbicide Target Sites from Natural Compounds

Powerful, new tools and approaches to natural product discovery and utilization are rapidly expanding our knowledge of chemical diversity, the biological activity, and the molecular genetics of naturally occurring compounds. Many of these compounds are phytotoxic and have the potential for use in weed management, either as a herbicide or as a genetically engineered allelochemical. But, still, compared to the synthetic herbicide discovery and herbicide-resistant crop development efforts, little has been done with natural products. This knowledge gap and the availability of new capabilities should attract future researchers to focus on discovery and development of natural compounds for weed management.
