An investigation into blended concrete mixes containing 15%, 30% and 45% fly ash and 30% blastfurnace slag as partial replacements of cement and coarse aggregate has been reported. An M25 grade concrete with proportions 1:1.57:3.37 (C:F.A.:C.A.: w/c=0.49) has been considered as the reference mix. All together 144 specimens have been tested at 7, 28, 91 and 365 days of maturity for compressive strength, split-tensile strength and flexural strength. A theoretical investigation on the axial load carrying capacities of bamboo reinforced blended concrete composite (BRBCC) columns of size 250 mm, 300 mm and 350 mm in diameter has also been analysed. Test results show that the blended concrete containing 15% fly ash and 30% blastfurnace slag as partial replacement of cement and coarse aggregate respectively gives about the same strength as conventional concrete at 365 days of maturity. The axial load carrying capacities of BRBCC columns have been found to be about 0.87 times those of conventional columns of the same size. These columns can be used to carry axial loads from beams in prefabricated building systems particularly for low cost housing.
