摘要

The fundamental concepts of sustainable development have been established some time ago, and although their practical applications in different fields of human endeavor do vary considerably, the interdependence of economical, environmental and social aspects of sustainability is never in doubt. However, short term and long term sustainability is affected by a range of factors, some identical, but others dissimilar to a degree which is influenced by the definition of "short" term and "long" term sustainability. In building and construction industries the ultimate depletion of economically accessible non-renewable raw materials and of the sources of non-renewable energy plays a particularly important role in solving the problems of long term sustainability. The paper addresses the solutions of short term sustainability as a prerequisite for the long term sustainability in building and construction industries, and considers the reliability and inherent limitations of the prediction models. It also offers a brief overview of the existing practices for the realization of short term sustainability.
