In the frame of the French Space Act CNES’s objectivernis to ensure that the technical risks associated withrnspace activities are properly mitigated. CNES providesrntechnical expertise to French government and willrncheck compliance with technical regulation beforernauthorisation by the ministry in charge of spacernactivities. CNES is developing and proposing therntechnical methods to be recommended to cope with thernlaw requirements.rnAt present, a work is led to establish a method tornevaluate the impact of atmospheric re-entry of orbitalrnsystems (satellites) on human health and environment.rnThis re-entry can have different causes:rn1. it is linked to a launch or satellite failure,rn2. it is a normal end-of-life.rnBased on the simulation of satellite parts, which arernsupposed to survive to an atmospheric re-entry, thernmethod aims at estimating materials likely to inducernhuman health or environmental impacts. Then, thernlevel of risk is analyzed taking into account thernquantity of materials involved and exposure scenarios,rnaccording to toxicity data available. In the paper, thernhypotheses and the method used will be developed on arnreal case.
