This paper presents a mathematical model of a backward curved inclined fan that can be used for simulation of HVAC control systems. The model is based on quasi static conditions. Initially the fan is modelled ideally, with no mechanical losses, and it applies to incompressible flow and is purely based on the fan laws. Secondly, losses, in terms of fan efficiency, are added to the model, thus enabling computation of required fan power and energy usage and also the fraction of fan power which goes into heating of ventilated air. Model performance has been validated against manufacturer's measurement data, and shows very accurate outputs. The presented model is suitable for simulation of fans in HVAC control systems. Although based on quasi steady state conditions, dynamical elements such as acceleration time can be added to the model.
