The channel assignment problem has been traditionally formulated using binary channel separation constraints between pairs of transmitters. These constraints are derived by considering the effect of each individual source of potential interference at every reception point. However, this approach does not account for interfering signals radiating from multiple sources simultaneously. In this paper we show that under the assumption of multiple sources of interference, binary channel separation constraints are insufficient if an adequate signal-to-interference ratio is to be guaranteed. We introduce additional constraints designed to mitigate the effects of dominant sources of multiple interference. When used in addition to binary constraints, the effect of interference from multiple sources is reduced. We also introduce a lower bound on the span of channels needed when excessive multiple (co-channel) interference is to be avoided.
