Using Forward Error Correction (FEC) technique is now of special interest in delivery of non-real time (NRT) information over ATM networks. Two-dimensional FEC codes have been proposed recently to recover cell loss in the ATM Virtual Paths (VP) and, by this, to prevent users Quality of Service (QoS) degradation in the ATM end-to-end connections. In this paper, we propose a specific class of the ATM-FEC technique that provides an additional flexibility to the coding/decoding procedures, which are performed at the VP-initiating and at the VP-terminating nodes. In the VP-initiating node, all cells to be transmitted over a given VP are grouped into a two-dimensional matrix information field (MIF). The special redundant cells are structured over the MIF rows and columns. These cells are used in the MIF decoding procedure, that enables working with variable size MIF, to protect a MIF cell from errors and to exclude any numeration system for the MIF cells.
