THE APM-INTRA SYSTEM FOR THE NEW MADRID BARAJAS AIRPORT EXPANSION

This paper describes the APM-Intra system, a new automated people mover (APM) based on the Bombardier CX-100* technology. The system is currently undergoing installation and commissioning in Madrid, Spain, and is scheduled to commence operation in 2004. rnThe paper begins with a description of Plan Barajas, the multibillion Euro airport expansion project for which the APM-Intra is designed. The expansion consists of a large new terminal and a new satellite terminal separated by one of five runways. The people mover is the only link between the two buildings for passengers and the main link also for airport service personnel, until a service road is built along the same tunnel. rnFeatures of the transit system are described. For the most part, the transit system is installed in parallel with the installation of the new airport facilities it is designed to serve. New features such as the dedicated CCTV system, which receives multiple images from every vehicle in the system and displays them in real-time at the Central Control Centre, are presented. Details on a new Central Control System design and the design of an updated Automatic Train Protection system are also presented.
