1.Introduction In this study the Variational Doppler Radar Analysis System (VDRAS),a radar data assimilation system based on the four-dimensional variational (4DVAR) technique,is employed to perform the numerical experiments with the scientific goal focusing on the quantitative precipitation forecast (QPF).The potential of the VDRAS as a research platform for the short-term forecasting of severe storms in the American Great Plains has been demonstrated in several previous studies.
