ABSORBABLE IMPLANTS IN FINGER FRACTURES: A BIOMECHANICAL STUDY

Absorbable implants are the preferred choice when temporary implants are needed in living tissues. During the healing period, the degradable device maintains the required fixation, decomposing gradually while stresses are transferred gradually to the healing bone so that no stress shielding will occur. Biodegradable polyglycolide implants have been introduced in osteofixation of cancellous bone fractures since 1985. According to recent clinical studies, results of absorbable implants in traumatology seem to be satisfactory. However, no study that assesses the biomechanical properties of absorbable rods in phalangeal fractures has been found by this research team. Thus, the purpose of this study is to compare rigidity among five different methods of pin fixation in two proximal phalangeal fracture models. Polyglycolide implants were compared with metallic implants.
