This paper describes a new type of hydrophone referred to as the cylindrically shaped "w" membrane device. The transducer works in such a way that the hydro-pressure on the cylindrical profile is transferred into shear stress in the "w" membrane in which shear mode g_(15) operates. The analysis shows that the amplitude of voltage response is proportional to radius of the cylindrical shell and independent of the thickness of the membrane. Both the sensitivity and the capacitance can be designed very high. This approach is confirmed by the simulation results.
