摘要

A Finite Element method is designed to handle conflicts during generalisation of maps. The mehtod is holistic and solves conflict problems for the entire map surface simultaneously. When a generalishd object changes size, the mehtod immediately causes displacements in surrounding objects. Using a small map section, it is shown that it is possible to obtain useful solutions to some of the conflict problems which have troubled automatic generalisation up to now.
