Organic coatings derived from palm stearin based alkyd resin

Alkyd resins constitute about 70 percent of the conventional resins used for organic surface coatings. These resins are polyesters modified with vegetable oils or fatty acids derived from them. The choice of components determine the type or class of the alky and ultimately the properties of the alkyds [1]. Most of the vegetable oils or their fatty acids can be utilized in alkyd resin synthesis. The oils (triglycerides) may be used both in native form and after thermal and/or physical and/or chemical treatment or in the form of the derivatives obtainable by different processes. Specific examples include linseed oil, soybean oil, sunflower oil, coconut oil, palm oil, peanut oil, rapeseed oil, cottonseed oil, castor oil, partly and completely dehydrated castor oils, stand oils, blown oils, epoxidized soybean oil, epoxidized linseed oil, and tallows [2-4].
