In this paper, the Al-Mg-Si system has been studied by means of thermodynamic calculation and experimental analysis to design and optimize those compositions likely to be most suitable for SSP. The main criteria including temperature sensitivity of solid fraction, liquidus-solidus interval, potential of age hardening, proportions of the primary α-Al phase, Mg2Si phase and Si phase are discussed. Four alloys are selected for casting trials. Microstructure investigation and tensile test are also performed. The experimental results show that processing controls and mechanical properties of selected alloys would be influenced on Mg and Si contents as well as Mg/Si ratio. And microstructures of the alloys have remarkably changed due to the effect of electromagnetic stirring.
