We numerically simulated the flow in Y-shaped and T-shaped micro-channel sorting devices and experimentally evaluated the device performance with mebiol as a carrier, which can change its state from liquid to gel by heating. The Finite Element Method simulation results of the flow in these channels suggest that the object materials can be collected faster by the T-shaped channel because of lower flow stagnation and of smaller velocity difference at the junction. T-shaped sorting device was fabricated in quarts glass plates by laser ablation, and the switching / sorting characteristics were measured using mebiol as a heat sensitive carrier material and lum diameter beads as an objective material. A switching time of 33ms was obtained in a T-shaped channel, which is more than an order of magnitude faster than that in Y-shaped sorting device previously evaluated reported.
