SUN POWER IN MICHIGAN’S UPPER PENINSULA: A PASSIVE SOLAR HOME STUDIO

This paper shows how thoughtful design strategy, coupled with sensitivity to constructionrndetails, can produce an affordable, effective passive solar home in areas subject to cloudy wintersrnand heavy snowfall. The paper shares the development of this home from inception to completion inrnone year, Land is acquired, the grant application is submitted, the builder is chosen, and the initialrndesign is refined and amplified to suit the site, meet the needs of the designer/owners who arerncreating both home and studio spaces, and the project must be completed in 1998. A primary goal inrnbuilding this home is to construct an affordable, energy efficient, passive solar house that looks likernany other house on the block and to introduce the general public to the principles of energyconsciousrnpassive solar design strategies and sustainable construction techniques.
