Durable Coatings for Fiber Cement

The appearance and in part the long term durability of fiber cement roofing and siding is a function of the coating. A high quality paint can beautify fiber cement and protect it from water penetration and related damage, while a degraded coating detracts from the architectural aesthetics and can at least give a. perception of a damaged substrate. We will present four general factors which can be controlled to give more durable fiber cement coatings. The first two ― polymer composition and paint formulation ― are governed by the paint manufacturer, while the others ― substrate preparation and drying conditions ― are within the domain of the applicator. Although these principles are true of all coatings, we will focus on water borne paints applied onto fiber cement. We will demonstrate these concepts with laboratory paints and accelerated ageing, and support them with actual exterior exposures.
