Recent regulatory trends from federal and state agencies suggest that many wastewater treatmentrnplants will be required to remove total nitrogen (TN) and/or total phosphorus (TP) in upcomingrnyears. In many instances, the required effluent nutrient concentrations are low (<3 mg N/L; <0.1rnmg P/L) and often exceed a technologies best achievable performance. This proceeding isrnderived from a WERF Nutrient Challenge compendium that focuses on tertiary denitrificationrnprocesses. Typically, these processes are the last barrier in a treatment train. As a result, theyrnpresent special challenges when attempting to meet low TN/TP levels. The designs are largelyrnbased on empirical experience and performance is variable. The objective of this study is tornprovide a baseline state of the industry document on key design/operational issues and identifyrnresearch gaps and challenges in meeting low TN/TP levels.
